Born: 8 May 1737, Putney, Surrey [Died] January 16, 1794, London. British historian. Studied at Oxford University, converted to Catholicism for a time, and lived in Lausanne, Switzerland. Traveled to Paris in 1763, where he became acquainted with Diderot and d'Alembert. During a trip to Italy in 1764, he saw the ruins of the Capitol in Rome and came up with the idea of writing a history of Rome. His six-volume magnum opus, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776-88), is known as a representative history book that provides a comprehensive overview in elegant prose from the 2nd century to the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
