… A pacemaker consists of a battery and electrodes that transmit electric current to the heart. There are two types of electrodes: myocardial electrodes, which are fixed directly to the myocardium, and catheter electrodes, which are inserted through a peripheral vein using a thin, cord-like conductor called a catheter and then inserted into the right atrium or right ventricle and fixed there along the venous flow. Myocardial electrodes are sewn into place after an incision is made in the chest to expose the myocardium, and are often used during cardiac surgery. Catheter electrodes require only a small incision in a peripheral vein under local anesthesia, so they have little effect on the body. …
