Rokuen Diary - Rokuon Nichiroku

Rokuen Diary - Rokuon Nichiroku

This is the general term for the diaries of the successive abbots of Rokuon-ji Temple in Kyoto. The writers were Yokokawa Keisan, Keijo Shurin, Baishuku Horin, Yusetsu Zuiho, and Kinshu Kentaku, and span the years from 1487 (Chokyo 1) to 1651 (Keian 4), including draft documents and remnants of poems and essays. There are 78 volumes in total. The successive abbots of Rokuon-ji Temple were known as soroku (soroku) and were in charge of monk affairs, so the diaries contain detailed records of all aspects of monk affairs, including the appointment and dismissal of abbots of Gozan-ha temples and temple land issues. Most of the diaries were handwritten originals, but most were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. The Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo produced a mimeograph of the documents that had been kept at Saiwai Jishi-in Temple in 1887 (Meiji 20), and based on this, the diary was compiled and published in six volumes between 1934 and 1937 (Showa 9-12). Since it was published during a period when the Soroku, whose real power had been usurped by the Inryo office, were once again in charge of Buddhist affairs, it has the characteristics of an official diary and is a valuable historical document for learning about Japan-Ming trade and the social situation in Kyoto from the end of the Muromachi period to the early Edo period.
