A chanter. Originally it meant a teacher who guides people from the wrong path to the right path, a monk who leads all living beings to the Buddhist path, or a Buddha or Bodhisattva. By extension, it refers to a monk who leads the monks in a Buddhist memorial service and presides over the service, sitting in front and playing a central role in carrying out the ceremony. It also refers to a monk who confesses and recites the ritual text in ceremonies such as the Kannon repentance ceremony. In Zen temples, it can also refer to the role of a Vinaya priest who sits at the head of the ceremony, begins chanting the sutras, and leads the monks in reciting the sutras.
