Fujiwara Tsugutada

An aristocrat from the late Nara period to the early Heian period. He was the second son of Fujiwara Toyonari and the daughter of Jinmushimaro. After serving as Shinano no Kami and Echizen no Kami, he became a councilor and Udaiben in 766. He subsequently served as the head of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Imperial Household, and the Ministry of War, and was promoted to Chunagon. During the Iji no Ikomaro Rebellion (780) in the Tohoku region, he was dismissed for failing to take up his post as an ambassador to the East, and was succeeded by Fujiwara no Oguromara. During the reign of Emperor Kanmu, he served as Nakatsukasakyo and head of Dazaifu (Dazaifu City), among other positions, and was promoted to Dainagon in 783 and to Udaijin in 789. He and his wife, Baekje no Myoshin, were highly favored by Emperor Kanmu, and the emperor often visited his villa in Tsugusawa (Minami Ward, Kyoto City). He died as Udaijin, Shonii (Senior Second Rank), and the Crown Prince's Tutor, Chuei Taisho. Although he had no significant achievements or talents, he was able to avoid public criticism because of his humble personality, as recorded in the "Nihon Koki." He was also involved in the selection of the "Shoku Nihongi." He was also known as Momozono Udaijin.

奈良時代後半から平安時代初期の貴族。藤原豊成と路虫麻呂の娘の子。次男。信濃守,越前守を経て,天平神護2(766)年右大弁で参議。以後,大蔵,宮内,兵部各省の長官を務めて中納言に昇進した。東北地方で起こった伊治呰麻呂の乱(780)の際,征東大使でありながら赴任しなかったので解任され,後任は藤原小黒麻呂となった。桓武朝では中務卿,大宰府(太宰府市)の長官などを歴任し,延暦2(783)年に大納言,9年に右大臣に昇った。妻百済王明信ともども桓武天皇の恩寵厚く,天皇はしばしば継縄の別荘(京都市南区)へ行幸した。右大臣正二位兼皇太子傅中衛大将で死去。恭謙な人柄のためさしたる功績も才識もなかったが,世間の譏りを免れたと『日本後紀』に記されている。『続日本紀』選進にも当たった。桃園右大臣とも称される。
