Kawasaki [city] - Kawasaki
A city in the eastern part of Kanagawa Prefecture, between Tokyo and Yokohama. It was incorporated as a city in 1924 and became a government-designated city in 1972. It has seven wards: Kawasaki, Saiwai, Nakahara, Takatsu, Tama, Miyamae, and Aso. It developed around the former Kawasaki-cho, a post town on the Tokaido road during the Edo period, and the former Daishi-cho, a temple town of Kawasaki Daishi (Heigenji Temple). From the Taisho to the early Showa periods, land reclamation of the Tokyo Bay coast progressed, and the development of a coastal industrial district began, leading to the completion of Kawasaki Port and the Keihin Canal. In 1951, Kawasaki Port was designated a specific important harbor, and an oil refinery was built on the reclaimed land on the southeast side of the Keihin Canal in the 1960s, and a steelworks in the 1970s. Currently, heavy industries such as steel, flour, oil, electrical machinery, chemicals, and electricity are located in the city, and the city's manufacturing shipments, which reached 3,835.4 billion yen (2003), are the second highest in the prefecture, making it the core city of the Keihin Industrial Zone. The city is served by the Tokaido Main Line, Keihin Tohoku Line, Yokosuka Line, Nambu Line, Tomei Expressway, and Keihin Kyuko Line, and in the Tama Hills area, which is served by the Tokyu Denentoshi Line and Odakyu Electric Railway Line, construction of Kohoku New Town has been progressing rapidly since the 1960s. Fruit cultivation, including pears and peaches, is thriving along the Tama River. Yomiuri Land is located here. In December 1997, the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line was opened across Tokyo Bay to Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 143.00 km2 . 1,425,512 people (2010).
