A town in Shibata County in the south of Miyagi Prefecture, occupying the northeastern foot of Mt. Zao. It has extensive forests and plains, and is a major producer of rice, field crops, and livestock. Its specialty products are tobacco and konjac. At the foot of Mt. Zao are the Aone and Gaga hot springs, and it is part of the Zao National Park. The Yamagata Expressway runs through the town.
