iPod - i-pod

A portable digital music player developed and released by the American company Apple. It has a built-in hard disk or flash memory with a capacity of 1-160 gigabytes, and can store approximately 2.4-40,000 songs. By connecting it to a computer using computer software called iTunes, music can be transferred and listened to. Specifically, music CDs can be converted and stored on the computer using iTunes into listenable data, which can then be copied and transferred to the iPod, and songs can also be purchased and downloaded from the paid music distribution site iTunes Store over the Internet and transferred to the iPod.

The first iPod, which had a capacity of 5 gigabytes and could store about 1,000 songs, was released in 2001 and became a huge hit. Since then, it has been improved several times, and as of 2013, four models are available: the iPod shuffle, which only plays music, the iPod nano, which can play videos and still images on a color display, the iPod classic, and the iPod touch. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle, and iPod classic allow you to enjoy podcasts downloaded from the iTunes Store. The iPod touch also has an Internet connection function, so you can download and purchase songs from the device without connecting it to a computer. The iPod classic, which has a capacity of 160 gigabytes, can play music continuously for up to 36 hours (up to 6 hours for videos) and takes about 4 hours to fully charge.

The arrival of the iPod led to a rapid spread of portable digital music players. The music distribution service that combined the iPod, iTunes, and the iTunes Store created a huge sensation, making the purchase of music online through downloads commonplace.

アメリカのアップル社が開発・発売した携帯デジタル音楽プレーヤー。1～160ギガバイトの容量をもつハードディスクあるいはフラッシュメモリーを内蔵しており、約240～4万曲の記憶が可能。iTunes(アイチューンズ)というパソコンソフトを使用してパソコンと接続することで、音楽を転送し聴取することができる。具体的には音楽CDをパソコン上でiTunesを使って聴取可能なデータに変換・蓄積し、コピーしてiPodに転送するほか、インターネットを利用して有料音楽配信サイトのiTunes Store(アイチューンズ・ストア)から曲をダウンロード購入し、iPodに転送することもできる。

　初代のiPodは5ギガバイトの容量をもち約1000曲の記憶が可能で、2001年に発売されて大ヒットを記録した。以後、何度か改良を繰り返し、2013年時点では音楽再生機能のみのiPod shuffle(アイポッドシャッフル)のほか、カラーディスプレーで動画や静止画の再生もできるiPod nano(アイポッドナノ)、iPod classic(アイポッドクラシック)、iPod touch(アイポッドタッチ)の4機種が発売されている。iPod nano、iPod shuffleおよびiPod classicでは、iTunes Storeからダウンロードしたポッドキャストを楽しむことができる。またiPod touchにはインターネット接続機能がついており、パソコンに接続することなく端末から楽曲をダウンロード購入できる。容量が160ギガバイトのiPod classicの場合で、音楽の連続再生時間が最大36時間（ビデオでは最大6時間）、完全充電時間は約4時間。

　iPodの登場により、携帯デジタル音楽プレーヤーの普及が急速に進んだ。また、iPod、iTunes、iTunes Storeの連携による音楽配信は大反響をよび、オンラインで楽曲等をダウンロード購入するという形態を一般的なものにした。
