Pool

Japanese: プール
Pool
(1) A type of billiards. A game in which players use one cue ball to drop 15 balls into a pocket. (2) A large, man-made tank for swimming. Swimming pool. The original meaning of the word pool was "puddle." This name was used because puddles formed by meandering rivers had no current and were suitable for splashing around in the water, bathing, and swimming. Eventually, a swimming moat was built around it, and the word came to mean a puddle drawn from the river. Alternatively, a partition and auxiliary facilities were installed in a lake or on the coast where there were few waves, making it a pool. In the 19th century, indoor pools began to be built in cities such as Vienna, and they became popular with many people. These facilities were more focused on bathing and sunbathing. Eventually, heated pools were built, and people could enjoy swimming all year round. In Japan, in the 1960s, the effects of pesticides made it almost impossible to swim in rivers, so efforts were made to build swimming pools in schools and local communities. In the 1970s, when the seawater at beaches began to become polluted by industrial wastewater and other things, large swimming pools began to be built on the coasts to replace the beaches. Large, artificial, flowing water pools and wave pools appeared.
