Japanese: 革細工 - かわざいく

Animal hides consist of the epidermis and dermis, and it is the dermis layer that is used in leatherwork. When the dermis is tanned, it becomes called leather. Depending on the type of hide and the tanning method, a wide variety of conditions and possibilities can be created for leather (hide (leather)). The dermis layer is mainly made of collagen, a type of protein, and has a complex mesh-like structure of bundles of fibers. Various tanning agents penetrate the fibers and the gaps between them, allowing leather to be produced in a variety of states, such as hard or soft.

動物の皮は表皮と真皮からなり，革細工に使われるのはその真皮層である。真皮はなめしの工程を経ると革と呼ばれる。皮の種類となめし法によって多種多様の条件と可能性をもつ革が作られる(皮(革))。すなわち真皮層はタンパク質の一種であるコラーゲンを主体とし，束状の繊維が入り組んで網状の構造となっているが，各種のなめし剤は繊維とその間隙に浸透して，それにより硬い，柔らかいなど種々の状態をもつ革を得ることができる。
