…About 800,000 Turks left Greece and about 2 million Greeks returned, but the national economy deteriorated significantly due to the defeat and the need to protect the returnees, and the government was barely supported by aid from the League of Nations and the United States (until 1925). Prior to this, Venizelos was ousted in the November 1920 election, and Constantine, who was restored to the throne, was also driven out, and Georgios II (reigned 1922-24, 1935-47) ascended to the throne, but the republicans won the general election in 1924 and the monarchy was abolished. The first president was former Minister of the Navy Koundouriotis, but the political struggle between the royalists and republicans continued and coups were repeated. …
