[raw]? [Died] Butoku 4 (621) One of the Chinese warlords at the end of the Sui and beginning of the Tang, Emperor Zheng (reigned 619-621). His pen name was Xingman. He was originally a Hu man from the Western Regions, but he gained the trust of Emperor Yang of Sui by ingratiating himself with him. However, sensing that the Sui dynasty's days were numbered, he secretly gathered forces and made a name for himself by suppressing rebellions. When Emperor Yang was killed, he installed a member of his family, Yang Dong, as emperor, but when a rift arose, he used his power to depose Yang Dong and establish the Zheng state, ascend to the throne, and poison Yang Dong to death. His rule was so harsh that he lost the hearts of the people, and he was eventually attacked, captured, and killed by Li Shimin (later Emperor Taizong of Tang).
