One of the scripts used in ancient India. It is a syllabary consisting of 252 letters. It is a North Semitic Aramaic script used in Achaemenid Persia, and developed in northwestern India under Persian rule. The oldest surviving inscription is an inscription by King Ashoka from the 3rd century BCE. By the 3rd century, it had spread throughout East Turkistan. It was later replaced by Brahmi script, and no documents from after the 5th century have been found.
