Around the 5th century BCE, when northwestern India was under the control of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, the Aramaic script, the official script of that dynasty, was improved with reference to the Brahmi script to create the Kharoshthi script, which was suitable for writing Indian languages. Inscriptions in this script have been discovered in northwestern India, but the Kharoshthi documents generally refer to secular documents written on wooden tablets, leather, silk cloth, paper, etc., excavated from Klorina (Loulan), Niya, and Endere in Central Asia. These documents include official documents such as orders, notices, reports, and court decisions, as well as letters between individuals.
