Shimizu family - Shimizu

One of the Gosankyo (three branches of the Tokugawa clan). Its ancestor was Shigeyoshi, the second son of the ninth shogun, Tokugawa Ieshige. Shigeyoshi was given a residence within the Shimizu Gate of Edo Castle when he was 14 years old in 1758 (8th year of the Horeki era), and he called it Shimizu Yakata, hence the name Shimizu family. The following year he came of age and took the surname Tokugawa, and his residence was completed. In 1762, he was given a fief of 100,000 koku and was treated as a member of the shogun's family. After that, there were three periods of interruption, but the lineage was succeeded by Atsunosuke, Nariyuki, Nariaki, and Narikatsu (all illegitimate children of the 11th shogun, Ienari), and the 6th shogun, Akitake (the 18th son of Mito's Tokugawa Nariaki), traveled to Europe in 1867 (Keio 3) for the Paris World Exposition (and later inherited the Mito family). The 8th shogun, Yoshitoshi, is known as a pioneer in Japan's aviation industry.

御三卿(ごさんきょう)の一つ。9代将軍徳川家重(いえしげ)二男重好(しげよし)を祖とする。重好は1758年（宝暦8）14歳のとき江戸城清水門内に屋敷地を与えられ、これを清水屋形(やかた)と称したため清水家とよばれる。翌年元服して徳川を姓とし、屋敷も完成し、62年、10万石の領地を与えられ、将軍の家族の一員として待遇された。以後三度の中絶期間があったが、敦之助(あつのすけ)、斉順(なりゆき)、斉明(なりあき)、斉彊(なりかつ)（いずれも11代将軍家斉(いえなり)の庶子）と相続し、6代昭武(あきたけ)（水戸の徳川斉昭(なりあき)十八男）は1867年（慶応3）パリ万国博覧会のために渡欧した（のち水戸家を継ぐ）。8代好敏(よしとし)はわが国航空界の先達(せんだつ)として知られる。
