…In 1868 (Meiji 1), Watarai Prefecture was established to govern the former Tenryo and Jingu-ryo territories, and the following year it was renamed Watarai Prefecture. In 1871, the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established, and the feudal domains were then merged into two prefectures, north and south, with the Ichishi and Ano counties of Ise Province as the border. The northern part, including Iga Province, became Anotsu Prefecture, and the southern prefectures of Watarai, Hisai, and Toba, including Shima Province, and the two prefectures of Wakayama and Shingu (former Kishu feudal domain retainer Mizuno clan territories) east of the Kumano River and south of the Kitayama River in Kii Province became Watarai Prefecture. The following year, Anotsu Prefecture was renamed Mie Prefecture, and in 1876, it was merged with Watarai Prefecture to establish the current prefecture boundaries. …
