Okaya [city] - Okaya

Japanese: 岡谷[市] - おかや
Okaya [city] - Okaya
A city in central Nagano Prefecture. Established as a city in 1936. It is located on the northwest shore of Lake Suwa, at the mouth of the Tenryu River. The central city area on the Suwa Basin has rapidly developed as a silk-reeling city since the introduction of mechanized silk-reeling in the early Meiji period. After World War II, the silk-reeling industry declined, and instead precision machinery such as clocks, cameras, and music boxes, as well as general machinery and electrical machinery industries, rapidly developed, accounting for more than 70% of the city's manufactured goods shipments (2003). It is also the largest producer of Shinshu miso. The Chuo Main Line runs through the city, and in the 1980s it became a junction for the Chuo Expressway and Nagano Expressway. 85.10 km2 . 52,841 people (2010).
