Enamel

Japanese:
Enamel

Enamel is a tissue that covers the surface of the tooth crown (the part that protrudes from the gums) and protects the dentin. It is the hardest tissue in the body, with a Mohs hardness rating of 6-7. It is composed of 2% water, 96% inorganic matter, and 2% organic matter, with most of it being inorganic, especially hydroxyapatite. Enamel is an epithelial tissue, but because it does not contain nerve tissue, no pain is felt even if only this part of the tooth develops a cavity. Enamel is formed before the teeth erupt into the oral cavity.
