The term "shinko shashin" (new photography) itself did not have any specific artistic claim behind it. In Japan, from the end of the Taisho period to the beginning of the Showa period, it was fashionable to use the term "shinko" to refer to anything that had modernist or left-wing tendencies, and in the case of photography, the term came to be used frequently in the early Showa period to refer to new photography that was different from the painterly tendencies of the time. It corresponds, so to speak, to the terms "neue fotografie" (new photography) in Germany and "modern photography" (modern photography) in England.
