A local lord of Owari Province (Aichi Prefecture) during the Muromachi period. In the Edo period, he became a hereditary daimyo. He was a descendant of the Seiwa Genji clan and Tada Mitsumasa. The founder of the family, Shigefusa, lived in Ogawa, Akuhigo, Chita County, Owari Province, and called himself Ogawa. During the time of his son, Shigekiyo, he moved to Mizuno, Yamada-no-sho, Kasugai County, Owari Province, and changed his name to Mizuno. After 11 generations, during the time of Sadamori, a castle was built in Kariya and made it his base. His great-grandson Tadamasa was caught between the two great powers, the Oda clan of Owari and the Imagawa clan of Suruga and Totomi, and married his daughter (known as O-Dai) to Matsudaira Hirotada of Okazaki, forming an alliance with the Matsudaira clan. However, after Tadamasa's death, his son Nobumoto became a subordinate of Oda Nobunaga, and O-Dai, who had married Tadahiro, was divorced. That son later became Tokugawa Ieyasu. After Nobumoto's death, the family was succeeded by his younger brother Tadashige, and then by another younger brother, Katsunari. In 1600 (Keicho 5), Katsunari succeeded the family, and in 1619 (Genwa 5), he was given 100,000 koku in Fukuyama, Bingo (Hiroshima Prefecture), but during the time of Katsmine, the family was abolished due to lack of an heir. One of his relatives, Katsunaga, restored the family and gave him 18,000 koku in Yuki, Shimousa (Ibaraki Prefecture). The Mizuno clan split into five lineages with the Fukuyama Mizuno clan as the head family. The most famous of these is Mizuno Tadakuni, who led the Tenpo Reforms.
