A worldwide orogeny in the early Paleozoic era. The main areas involved are the UK north of London and the Scandinavian peninsula west of the backbone range (collectively known as the Caledonian orogen), and the northern Appalachians of North America. In the former, subsidence began almost from the beginning of the Paleozoic era, forming a geosyncline. At the end of the Silurian period, folding, metamorphism, and granite intrusion occurred, leading to uplift and the formation of mountain ranges. In the northern Appalachians, folding was significant after the Ordovician period, and is known as the Taconic orogeny.

古生代前半の世界的造山運動。関連するおもな地域は，ロンドン以北の英国とスカンジナビア半島の脊梁山脈より西（合わせてカレドニア造山帯），および北米の北部アパラチア。前者ではほぼ古生代初期から沈降が始まり，地向斜を形成。シルル紀末に褶曲(しゅうきょく)・変成作用・花コウ岩貫入があり，隆起して山脈が生じた。北部アパラチアではオルドビス紀後の褶曲が著しく，タコニック造山と呼ばれる。
