They opposed the Meiji government's liberal policies from a conservative and ultranationalist standpoint, carried long swords on their belts, wore topknots and eboshi hats, revered Shinto, hatted foreigners, and advocated restorationist xenophobia. The Kokukento (National Rights Party) led by Ikebe Kichijuro and the Minkento (Civil Rights Party) led by Miyazaki Hachiro were also in the area, and although their ideologies differed, they both took an anti-government stance. ...
