A type of additional punishment in which a prison official paraded the criminal, or the head or corpse of an executed criminal, through the city for public viewing. Exposing the criminal to the public was meant to set an example, and to demonstrate power by showing the public that the criminal had been arrested and executed. Parade punishment was not stipulated in the Ritsuryo Code, but appears to have arisen during the Heian period. It was standardized that leaders of rebellions and other serious criminals would be beheaded by parading their heads through the capital with spears on them. This was called "crossing the main road" or "crossing the capital." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
