Japanese: 即興 - そっきょう（英語表記）improvisation

Improvisation is the act of creating something spontaneously, without prior preparation. It is usually used to describe the so-called Musesque arts, such as music, poetry, and speech. In other words, just like the Japanese expression "improvisation based on excitement ," improvisation is a creative activity that values the outpouring of inspiration from the Muses in the Western tradition and values the brilliance that is not found in planned and refined works. According to French philosopher Jankélévitch, there are no rules for improvisation and it cannot be taught. It is simply "starting," and the beginning can only be revealed. In other words, rather than generating ideas, the reality of improvisation is to capture and accept the ideas that are "born" with the attention of a strong, tense mind. Therefore, its creativity is outside the control of intention, and improvisation is deeply rooted in the unconscious.

Improvisational Works

Genres of works created with the aim of improvisation include impromptu poetry, impromptu music, and impromptu theatre, all of which are called impromptu (whereas improvisation means "activity without prediction," this word means "prepared" or "in front of one's eyes"). Among these, impromptu theatre is a work in which real actors and directors become characters and develop their own theatrical theories, and it is thought to have started with Molière's L'Impromptu de Versailles (1663). As is typical in the case of this impromptu theatre, impromptu is generally a pre-formed work that incorporates an improvisational flavor, and is not itself improvised. And it is almost impossible to create a work by pure improvisation, and if we consider impromptu poetry, it is a work that develops a given theme within the framework of a fixed poem. If this is true in individual creative performances, then a set of shared conventions among performers is essential, especially in collective improvisation such as jazz improvisation.

Improvisation

On the other hand, improvisation can be found in any performance of reproduction art, even if it is a performance of a pre-existing work. This is what the French music aesthetician Brullet called improvisational performance, which seeks to spontaneously turn the music into sound as if the performer were creating it in the moment when playing a score. Improvisation is nothing other than ongoing creativity. Therefore, in contemporary art, which is based on reflection on creativity, there is a powerful trend that pursues improvisation in opposition to the position that values planned composition.

あらかじめ準備することなく、その場で思いのままにつくりだすこと。音楽、詩、演説のような、いわゆるミューズ的芸術についていわれるのが普通である。すなわち、日本語で「興に即する」というのと同じく、西洋の伝統においてもミューズの女神たちの霊感の流露を重んじ、計画され推敲(すいこう)された作品にはない輝きを尊ぶ考えにたつ創造的活動である。フランスの哲学者ジャンケレビチによれば、即興に規則はなく、教えることができない。それは端的に「始める」ことであり、始まりは啓示されるほかはない。つまり想を生み出すというよりも、「生まれてくる」想を、強い緊張をはらんだ精神の注意力でとらえ、受容するのが即興の実態である。したがって、その創造性は意図の制御の埒外(らちがい)にあり、即興は無意識に深く根ざしている。

即興的作品

即興を旨としてつくりだされた作品のジャンルには、即興詩、即興曲、即興劇などがあり、いずれもインプロンプチュimpromptuとよばれる（improvisationが「予測抜きの活動」を意味するのに対して、この単語の語義は「準備されている」とか「目の前で」である）。このうちで即興劇とは、現実の俳優や演出家が登場人物となって自らの演劇論を展開するもので、モリエールの『ベルサイユ即興劇』L'Impromptu de Versailles（1663）が始まりと思われる。この即興劇の場合に典型的にみられるとおり、impromptuとは総じて即興的な味わいを盛り込んであらかじめ形成された作品であって、それ自体が即興であるわけではない。そして純粋な即興で作品をつくりあげることはほとんど不可能であり、即興詩を考えてみれば、与えられた主題を定型詩の枠にのっとって展開したのがその作品である。個人の創作においてそうであるならば、ジャズの即興演奏のように集団で行う即興の場合にはなおのこと、演奏者たちが共有する一連の約束事が不可欠である。

即興性

だが他方において、あらゆる再生芸術の実演に際して、たとえそれが既成の作品の実演であるとしても、そこに即興性を認めることができる。フランスの音楽美学者ブルレのいう即興的演奏がそれであり、楽譜を演奏するうえで、その曲をあたかも当の演奏者がそこでいま創造しているかのように、内発的に音化していくことを求めたものである。即興性とは現に進行している創造性にほかならない。そこで、創造性についての反省に立脚する現代芸術のなかには、計画的構成を重んずる立場と対立して、即興性を追求する有力な潮流があるわけである。
