... Cotton clothing, obi, juban, apron, geta, etc. were given as attire. Attire was often specified in the servant's contract. For example, in 1845 (Koka 2), a servant's contract for a charcoal maker at a fertilizer wholesaler in Osaka read, "Two seasons of attire: cloth shrouds in summer and cotton cloth in winter." This term later came to mean that "attire" meant doing things in a standard way.
