These are two agreements concerning the continental shelf between Japan and the Republic of Korea that were signed on January 30, 1974 and came into force on June 22, 1978: the "Agreement between Japan and the Republic of Korea Concerning the Delimitation of the Northern Part of the Continental Shelf Adjacent to the Two Countries" and the "Agreement Between Japan and the Republic of Korea Concerning the Joint Development of the Southern Part of the Continental Shelf Adjacent to the Two Countries." The former agreement specifies the boundary line of the continental shelf between Japan and the Republic of Korea in the Western Channel of the Tsushima Strait using 35 coordinates, which is the median line between Japan and the Republic of Korea taking into account Iki and Tsushima on the Japanese side. The latter agreement on joint development specifies the area for joint development of petroleum resources (including natural gas) in the East China Sea by Japan and the Republic of Korea using 20 coordinates, and stipulates the methods of development and cooperation regarding development. The joint development zone is an area where there is overlap in the continental shelf boundary dispute, with South Korea insisting on the natural extension of the land and Japan insisting on the median line, and this joint development agreement has effectively shelved the issue of jurisdiction.
