In the Natufian culture of Palestine (dated to 8000-7000 BC by carbon-14), they were used to harvest wild grasses, and since then, straight-bladed tools fitted to bone handles have been widely used. …穀類，牧草などを刈る刃物。石の刃をそなえる鎌は，西アジアで細石器の植刃，すなわち長さ2cm内外の長方形の細石刃を，柄に作りつけた細溝にいくつもはめこんで用いる道具の一種として出現した。パレスティナのナトゥフ文化(炭素14法による測定年代は前8000‐前7000年)で，野生のイネ科植物の収穫に用いられて以来広くおこなわれたのは，骨の柄にはめた直線刃のものである。おそくも前3000年以降，エジプト，メソポタミアではL字ないし〈し〉字形の柄が出現し，握る部分と刃がほぼ直角をなす鎌となり，石の刃が全体で内湾弧を描くように整えられた。…
