A perennial plant of the Juncaceae family (APG classification: Juncaceae). Also called Shiranei. A common plant found in villages and on roadsides in mountain areas. The stems grow in clumps, 30-50 cm tall, with several linear leaves similar to those of grasses at the bottom, and a cyme at the top. The lowest bracts are leaf-like and longer than the inflorescence. Flowers grow singly on the branches of the inflorescence, with bracteoles at the base. There are six lanceolate perianth segments, about 4 mm long, and six stamens, almost half the length of the perianth segments. The capsules are the same length as the perianth segments or slightly shorter, and are shiny. Widely distributed in Japan, China, Central Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia. It is thought to have been naturalized in Japan before history. [Takemi Shimizu July 19, 2019] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
