The name Histology (German) was coined in 1819 by the German August F. J. K. Mayer (1787-1865). In the first half of the 19th century, the great physiologist J. Muller appeared in Germany and pioneered functional anatomy. Many of his students became active as histologists in the 19th and 20th centuries. This was around the time that T. Schwann and M. J. Schleiden were proposing the cell theory, and the groundwork for the development of histology was already in place.
