Al-Jabartī, `Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥasan

Al-Jabartī, `Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥasan
Born: 1753. Cairo
[died]1825/1826. Cairo Egyptian historian. His ancestors were from Jabalt, Ethiopia. His seventh generation ancestor moved from Jabalt to Cairo, and in the late 15th or early 16th century, he entered the Jabalt Riwaq (a study facility with dormitories and classrooms) at Al-Azhar University, and eventually became its head (shaykh). His descendants inherited the position of head, and Jabalti became his own. His main work, `Ajā'ib al-āthār fi al-tarājim wa'l-akhbār (4 volumes), is a history of Egypt from 1688 to 1821, covering important periods in the modernization of Egypt, such as Napoleon's Egyptian campaign and the first half of Muhammad Ali's rule. It follows the traditional chronological format of Arab historians, but includes a wealth of biographies of important people. He seems to have intended to write a sequel, but it is doubtful whether he ever did so. His histories were avoided by the descendants of Muhammad Ali, and the complete works were not printed until 79 or 80. He also wrote several other works, including "Muzhir al-taqdīs bi-dhahāb dawlat al-Faransīs," a history of the French occupation of Egypt, but no edition of "The Thousand and One Nights" has yet been discovered.
