Nobuzane Fujiwara

Japanese:
Nobuzane Fujiwara

Dates of birth and death unknown. Court painter and poet of the mid-Kamakura period. One theory is that he died on December 15, 1265 (Bun'ei 2), aged 89. He was the son of Fujiwara Takanobu and nephew of Teika. He went by the name Takazane until his early 20s. He served as a court official, and after serving as Nakatsukasa Gon no Taifu, he became Shoshi no Ge and Sakyo Gon no Daibu in 1231 (Kanki 3). In his later years, he became a monk and took the name Jakusei. He inherited his father Takanobu's portrait painting techniques, and developed and perfected the style of portrait painting. It is recorded that in 1218 (Kenpo 6), he painted the Chuden Gyokai Zukan (a copy still exists), and in 1221 (Jokyu 3), he painted a portrait of Emperor Gotoba just before he was exiled to Oki after the Jokyu War. He is known for his active artistic activities, such as painting portraits of 36 famous poets of the time in 1233 (Tenpuku 1). Many of his works are known to be his own works, but the Gotoba-in Portrait (National Treasure) kept at Minase Jingu Shrine in Osaka Prefecture is an excellent example of the portrait technique, and fits well with the above record. It is also believed that the Zuishin Teiki Emaki (Suite Garden Mount) (Okura Shukokan, Tokyo) and the Thirty-six Immortal Poets Emaki (Satake version) also contain parts drawn by Nobuzane. He was also active as a poet, with his works being selected for poetry anthologies such as "Shinchokusenshu," and his family anthology "Nobuzane Asonshu" is still extant. He also wrote a collection of tales called "Ima Monogatari," which shows his versatility.
