An American oil company controlled by the Mellon Group. One of the majors. Headquartered in Pittsburgh. Founded in 1922, taking over from an older company of the same name founded in 1907, the company was based in Port Arthur, Texas, and grew with the development of the Gulf (Gulf of Mexico) oil fields, becoming one of the major oil companies. In contrast to Exxon and Mobil, the company focused on expanding its oil production (upstream) division and began oil development early on. Overseas, it expanded into Mexico in 1913, developed oil fields in Venezuela in 1924, and successfully discovered the Burgan oil field in Kuwait with BP in 1938. In 1954, it acquired a 7% interest in an Iranian consortium. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
