In mollusks and arthropods with an open vascular system, blood flows from the heart through the arteries and into the spaces between tissues (hemocoel), then through the respiratory tract and veins and back to the heart. In this case, blood is indistinguishable from lymph and is called hemolymph, since it has the functions of both.
