Fringeworm - Fringeworm

Japanese: フサゴカイ(房沙蚕) - フサゴカイ
Fringeworm - Fringeworm
A general term for annelids belonging to the order Terebellida of the class Polychaeta. This name comes from the tuft of numerous thread-like tentacles at the end of the head. They hide under boulders on the coast or in rock crevices, but some live on the muddy bottom of the deep sea. There are about 650 known species worldwide, and 60 known in Japan. Body length is 3-10 cm, with 100-250 segments. The body is divided into three parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen, and is almost cylindrical, thickened at the front and tapering toward the back. The thorax consists of 10-20 setae, and has 2-3 pairs of thread-like or dendritic gills at the front.
