This is the most advanced culture of the Early Paleolithic Acheulean. The reference site is the Micoque rock shelter in the Dordogne region of France, where it is located above the Tayac and Mousterian cultures. Because it is found in layers from the end of the Riss-Würm Interglacial Period to the beginning of the Würm Glacial Period, it is sometimes considered to be of the Middle Paleolithic period. In other words, chronologically it is partly parallel to the Mousterian culture. Whether or not it is accompanied by Levallois techniques varies depending on the site, as is the case with the Mousterian culture. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
