Dionysius [I] - Dionysius
Tyrant of Syracuse. He used the common people to gain power after 405 BC and extended his influence over the whole island of Sicily. He opposed Carthage and blocked its advance eastward, and advanced into southern Italy, establishing colonies there. He was also known as a lover of literature.
