This is a type of helmet from the Kofun period, used for a limited period from the mid-5th century to the beginning of the 6th century (Figure). Originally it was worn with a kaku-ko armor, but in Japan it was mainly worn in combination with a short armor. It has a shape similar to a baseball cap, with a semi-moon-shaped brow visor on the front of the hemispherical bowl. A hemispherical bowl is placed on top of the base plate at the top, and a receiving bowl is placed on top, connected by a tube. In addition to iron, there are many examples made of gilt bronze or iron with gilt bronze plating. Some gilt bronze parts have chisel-carved patterns. The brow marks often have a series of arcs on the outer edge, with triangular or lens-shaped openwork patterns on the inside. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
