A major ship of the Shogunate Navy at the end of the Edo period. Built in the Netherlands in 1866 (Keio 2), it was sailed to Yokohama in March of the following year with Enomoto Takeaki, who was studying abroad, and others on board. It was a 2,590-ton bulk-type, three-masted, motor-sailed wooden warship with a total length of 72.8 meters, width of 13 meters, one 400-horsepower steam engine, a steaming speed of 10 knots, 26 standard cannons, and a crew of 350 to 500. It was said to be a world-class leading ship at the time. After the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in January 1868, it returned to Edo from Osaka with the former Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu on board. In August of the same year, it entered Hakodate as the flagship of the former Shogunate breakaway fleet commanded by Enomoto Takeaki, and in November, while anchored in Esashi, it ran aground and sank due to bad weather. Documents related to the Kaiyo Maru and salvaged belongings are kept and exhibited at the Esashi Town Cultural Center.
