[Born] 1554/1555 Died October 22, 1633. Patriarch of Moscow, Russia. Seal name: Fedor Nikitich Romanov. Father of Mikhail Romanov, the first Tsar of the Romanov dynasty. Rising to prominence as a soldier and diplomat. Losing in a contest for the throne with Boris Godunov, he became a monk. In 1605 he was appointed Archbishop of Rostov, and in 1608 by Dmitry II, he was appointed Patriarch, but this was not officially recognized. In 1610 he was sent to Poland as an envoy to seek an alliance, but the agreement broke down and he was taken into captivity in 1611. In 1613 his son ascended to the throne, and in 1619 he returned to Russia and became Patriarch of Moscow. From then on, he effectively exercised power in place of Mikhail as "Great Prince," promoting the development of a tax system and the immobilization of serfs on land.
