Edo Shigenaga

Japanese:
Edo Shigenaga
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A military commander in the late Heian period. A member of the first branch of the Kanto Taira clan and Chichibu clan, he was a local lord whose family name was Edo-go, Toshima-gun, Musashi Province (around Kita-ku, Tokyo). He was commonly known as Taro. His father was Shigetsugu. When Minamoto no Yoritomo raised an army in August 1180, he attacked the Miura clan, which was on Yoritomo's side, along with his relatives Kawagoe Shigeyori and Hatakeyama Shigetada. In October of the same year, when Yoritomo's large army, which had risen again in Boso, approached Musashi Province, he surrendered with the mediation of his relatives, the Kasai and Toshima clans. At this time, Yoritomo appointed him as Rususho Sokengyo, which was the command authority for the Musashi Province office. There are various theories about this appointment, but it is thought that it was given to him as a temporary official authority to guard Musashi Province while he was away, as most of his relatives, including Kawagoe and Hatakeyama, accompanied Yoritomo to Kamakura.
