Mudéjar (English spelling)

The term is a Spanish corruption of the Arabic mudajjan, referring to "remnants," that is, Muslims who were allowed to remain in the Iberian Peninsula as subjects after it had been reconquered by Christians, while maintaining their own religious and legal practices. As the Reconquista (War of Reconquest) progressed after the fall of Toledo in 1085, the number of Mudéjars gradually increased. Over time, they assimilated into Spanish society and began to speak Romance languages. They played a major role in transmitting the excellent culture, learning, and technology of Islam to medieval Spain and, ultimately, to other European countries.

アラビア語のムダッジャンがスペイン語に転訛したもので，〈残留者〉すなわち，キリスト教徒に再征服された後のイベリア半島で，自分たちの信仰･法慣習を維持しながらその地に被支配者として残留を許可されたイスラム教徒をいう。1085年のトレド陥落以後のレコンキスタ(国土回復戦争)の進展で，ムデーハルの数はしだいに増加した。時とともに彼らはスペイン社会に同化してロマンス語を話すようになった。彼らがイスラムの優れた文化･学問･技術を，中世スペイン，ひいてはヨーロッパ諸国に伝達した役割は大きい。
