Canker
An underwater work test vessel belonging to the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (→ Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology). Completed in May 1985. Its official name is "KAIYO", an underwater work test vessel. It is a semi-submersible catamaran with the following main specifications: Overall length 61.55m, width 28.0m, depth (to the upper deck) 10.6m, planned draft 6.3m, and gross tonnage 2849t. It is equipped with equipment for long-term diving experiments, marine surveys including precise measurements of seafloor topography, etc. The equipment includes a saturation diving device (consisting of an underwater elevator and an on-board decompression chamber), radio navigation equipment (a hybrid of Decca, Loran C, NNSS, GPS, and microwave positioning equipment), acoustic positioning equipment, automatic positioning system, multi-narrow beam echo sounding equipment, and a computer (μVAX). It is also equipped with a sealift crane (13t) and a stern A-frame crane (22t).

Kawasaki Heavy Industries introduced technology from the Netherlands and completed this offshore work platform in 1969. It has four legs, each 53 meters long, that support a platform that is 42 meters long and 24 meters wide, and is used for pile driving, port construction, boring, and other work in oceans up to 30 meters deep. With a 4-knot current, it can be set up with wave heights of 5.5 meters and wind speeds of up to 60 meters. It is particularly useful as a work base for oil development on the continental shelf and for constructing structures on the seabed.
