In his 1916 essay, Fritz Strich, following Wölfflin's concept of art history, discovered the unique creative principles of 17th century literature, which had previously been poorly regarded, and reevaluated it. Since then, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s, there has been a growing tendency to view 17th century German literature as a unified concept called Baroque. Furthermore, there was also a tendency to regard Baroque as a uniquely German phenomenon, arguing that it was literature that embodied German national or ethnic character. …
