As Joruri became more popular in the early modern period, various theories about the origin of Joruri were born, and a theory was created that the author was a real talented woman who was close to the powerful people of the time. Otsushi was a maid to Oda Nobunaga or Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Midai no Mandokoro (also known as Yodo-dono), and was highly renowned for her talent.
