Funeral March - Funeral March (English)

Although the solemn and mournful marches are generally used at funerals, there are many pieces that are considered art music and are not practical. There are short independent piano pieces by Chopin (Op. 72 No. 2) and Liszt (Year 3 of the Pilgrimage Years), but famous funeral marches are actually part of larger works. Representative examples include the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 (Heroic), the third movement of Piano Sonata No. 12, the third movement of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2, and the "Siegfried's Funeral March" from Wagner's music drama "Twilight of the Gods". There are also many examples, such as Schubert's "The Beautiful Mill Girl" No. 18, where the heavy rhythm of the piano suggests a funeral.

一般には葬儀で用いられる荘重かつ哀感のこもった行進曲をさすが、実用から離れた芸術音楽としての楽曲も多い。独立した小品としてはショパン（作品72の2）やリスト（『巡礼の年』第3年）のピアノ曲があげられるが、有名な葬送行進曲はむしろ大規模な作品の一部をなしている。代表的なものとしてはベートーベンの交響曲第3番（英雄）の第2楽章、ピアノ・ソナタ第12番の第3楽章、ショパンのピアノ・ソナタ第2番の第3楽章、そしてワーグナーの楽劇『神々の黄昏(たそがれ)』の「ジークフリートの葬送行進曲」などがある。なお、シューベルトの『美しい水車屋の娘』第18曲のように、ピアノの重苦しいリズムの刻みで葬送を暗示する例も多くある。
