Sanjo family
The Fujiwara Northern House Kan'in line. Its founder was Kinzane's son Jitsugyo. It was an important family second only to the regents, and especially in the late Edo period, Sanetsumu and Sanetomi emerged from it and were active in politics, and in the Meiji period they were awarded dukedoms. They were also famous for playing the flute. There are the Shigenoi, Kawabata, Ano, Anenokoji, Ogimachi Sanjo, and Sanjo Nishi families as branch families.

藤原北家閑院流。公実の子実行を祖とする。摂関家に次ぐ家柄として重きをなしたが,特に幕末に実万 (さねつむ) ,実美 (さねとみ) が出て政界で活躍,明治にいたって公爵を授けられた。笛の家としても有名。分家に滋野井,河鰭 (かわばた) ,阿野,姉小路,正親町三条,三条西の諸家がある。
