Ash Pit

Japanese: 灰坑 - かいこう
Ash Pit

Some settlements made up of such dwellings have storage cellars called ash pits (in Japan, they are called bag-shaped pits because their cross section is like a pouch with a wide bottom). Small pit dwellings continued to be built in the following Ryuzan period, and are characterized by having lime laid on the floor.
