Ash Pit

...Some of the square or circular pit dwellings are divided by pillars and walls. Some settlements made up of such dwellings have storage cellars called ash pits (in Japan, they are called bag-shaped pits because their cross section is like a pouch with a wide bottom). Small pit dwellings continued to be built in the following Ryuzan period, and are characterized by having lime laid on the floor.
