In 1282, the people of Sicily rebelled against the House of Angevin, who had ruled Sicily for 16 years. It is said that on the evening of Holy Monday, March 31, the people of Palermo rebelled in protest against the tyranny of French soldiers at the time of the vespers' bell, and the revolt spread to the whole island, killing many French people. As a result of this revolt, the power of the House of Angevin was wiped out from Sicily, and Pedro III of Aragon took the throne of Sicily instead. At the root of this revolt was the people's rebellion against the oppression of the House of Angevin, but it was also complicated by the schemes of the surviving retainers of the House of Hohenstaufen, who had ruled Sicily until the mid-13th century, and the ambitions of Pedro III. As a result, Sicily and southern Italy, centered on Naples, became separate countries, and the fighting between the two countries continued until 1302. The revolt is the subject of Verdi's opera of the same name (premiered in 1855). [Kouichirou Shimizu] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
