It is called nedoko, nebeya, nesho, nand, chodai, chouda, etc., and it is obviously a bedroom. It is also called simply heya, but it is a rare part in the open-air Japanese house that is considered as a private room. However, it was limited to use by the head of the household and his wife. It is said to have originated from the storeroom or chodai style of the Heian period shinden-zukuri style. The old style has three sides made of wooden or earthen walls, no windows, the threshold of the entrance is slightly higher, and the name hajikakushi, which seems to be a name from the time when straw was laid on the wooden floor. Before the wooden floor, it was a doza, where the ground was dug and rice husks, straw, or thatch were laid on top of a straw mat.
