Kineya Rokusaburo (4th generation)

Head of the Nagauta shamisen school. A disciple of the first Kineya Masajiro. In 1808, he succeeded the fourth. Together with the tenth Kineya Rokuzaemon, he is said to be the founder of the Nagauta revival. He was particularly skilled at composing, and is famous for having gained the favor of the seventh Ichikawa Danjuro, who composed "Kanjincho." Other works he composed include "Oimatsu," which was the pioneer of pure appreciation music that was separate from Kabuki, "Fujimusume," "Azuma Hakkei," and "Matsu no Midori." In 1841, he changed his name to Rokuo. As his address was at the edge of Ueno Pond, his school was subsequently called the Ikenohata school.

長唄三味線方の家元。1世杵屋正次郎の門弟。文化5 (1808) 年,4世を継ぐ。 10世杵屋六左衛門とともに長唄中興の祖といわれる。特に作曲にすぐれ,7世市川団十郎の知遇を得,『勧進帳』を作曲したことは名高い。そのほか,歌舞伎から離れた純鑑賞曲の嚆矢となった『老松 (おいまつ) 』や『藤娘』『吾妻八景』『松の緑』など。天保 12 (41) 年,六翁と改名。その住所が上野池の端にあったので,以後,この派を池の端派という。
